Weekly Links (#10)

I’ve been really busy this week, between classes, hanging out with people on my floor, and burying myself in the library (no I’ve not finished reading the Iliad yet), I hardly have enough time for blogging. Here are a few highlights from the past two weeks at Columbia instead of actual links.

Intrepid

During Orientation week, there was one night were Columbia rented out the USS Intrepid for a party. I pretty much avoided the dancing (not really my thing) and lurked in the museum part of the ship. Not the coolest museum I’ve seen, but it was interesting to look at. The view from the deck, however, was spectacular.

Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET)

Now this was more my type of museum. I’m really interested in pretty much any kind of art and I was having so much fun just running around the museum by myself (yes, I did ditch the group). We didn’t get very much time there so I only explored the first floor.

Weekly Links (#9)

The past few weeks I’ve focused mainly on photography. I’m going to make the shift over to movies this week. I recently watched Only Lover’s Left Alive starring Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton (two of my favorite actors).

only_lovers_left_alive_ver3_xlgThe movie tells the tale of thousand year old vampires who are still very much in love with each other, but disillusioned with the world they live in. I’d expected this movie to be more stylized, and I was a little nervous. The last movie I’d expected to be “artsy” was Midnight in Paris, a movie that I didn’t connect well with despite featuring characters like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. I like movies to give me what they promise me. If I’m told there’s action, I want quality action that actually contributes to an interesting story (unlike the Transformers series). I found Midnight in Paris to be a rather dull romp through one of the most exciting times in literary history with improbable twists.  Continue reading

This week I’m featuring my sister Jessie over at her blog Regatta and Prada.

regatta and Prada 2

She’s just starting out her blog, which will feature her adventures in rowing as well as her interest in fashion and design. I love the concept for this blog because it blends the high seas with high fashion. I’ve seen a lot a fashion blogs, and there are plenty of personal blogs out there (including mine), but I like her unique take on both. I actually got to help design the blog with her and it was incredibly fun. Jessie is full of so many ideas for this blog and I can’t wait to see where it takes her. Click on her banner to check it out!

It’s photography again! If you couldn’t tell from last week’s feature, I love photography, especially of the editorial or avante garde variety. I’ll spare you the monologue this time about why I love photography so much (but if you’re really interested look at week #4).
This week it’s Réjean Brandt. I love the bright pops of color and the movement that he’s captured in these photographs.

A weekly feature in which I display the art, music, movies, and other things that I’ve come across during the week I’ve always loved Anndr Kusuriuri’s art. It’s always detailed with vibrant hues, but I love how you can see some of the brushstrokes if you look hard enough. I something simple as a portrait can convey so much emotion.  2a2c3a64597081b5d421e5db672bdef2-d5nm7ul-2                     nightwish_by_anndr-d4oyy2t-2 (Cloud Rhapsody)                                                                                     (Nightwish) e1849e1916c0b76f7c49366751057671-d5aceec-2

A weekly feature in which I display the art, music, movies, and other things that I’ve come across during the week I’ve been following Heylenne’s artwork for a few years now, and she just recently got a Tumblr account a few months ago. I’m always blown away by her skill in both traditional and digital mediums. Her art reminds me of fairytale storybook illustrations. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
